Summary of Type: Problem Solving

To solve the problem that is WJSN The Black’s album, ‘My attitude’,  which has a cover which provides a typeface which, I feel, does not fit the two songs featured well. The songs and the concept used by the group provide a sultry feel, which isn’t reflected in the typeface used on the album cover. My mission is would be to make letterforms based on the overall ‘sexy’ feel of the songs which fit WJSN The Black’s concept better.

REFLECTION

Experience

Overall, I found Advanced Typography to be more fun to learn compared to Typography. Despite having to learn different layouts, systems, applications, etc, I was able to enjoy a lot of it. I found the experience so intriguing and interesting as it made me realise the many ways type can be arranged in while still being visually appealing & attractive. For me, my favourite was definitely Task 02: Key Artwork & Collateral because I felt like I found so much about myself, as a designer and just as a being! It really opened my eyes, and I can't wait to carry this experience with me as I grow as a designer.

Observations

I observed many things when taking this module. In Task 01, I saw how many ways type could be arranged and gone. Especially, with the knowledge that was bestowed upon us by Mr Vinod, whenever I see something and now, realise what it is, it feels so mind boggling in a good way! Nowadays, I spend even more time observing the type around me, trying to think if its suitable for certain objects and more. I would say my observations definitely flowed into my other modules as well, as I need to choose proper and suitable typefaces for my projects & assignments.

Findings

I noticed every task in this module led to some self-discovery about myself. For Task 01, I found out that I absolutely adore Bevel & Emboss on type. For Task 02,  I was able to discover my soul (as cheesy as that sounds...). For Task 03, I found my love for type. Its cliche but I do believe this module has made me find things out about myself, and made me find more enjoyment in designing. I remember messing around with some tools and going :O because I thought they were so cool! I would like to thank my friends too, for I probably wouldn't have been able to find as much knowledge as I did without them.
