REFLECTION
Experience
Overall, I would say this class has been a really good experience, probably one of my favourite modules this semester. I think it mainly had to do with the creative freedom we were given with the book tasks, but it allowed for me to reinstall the knowledge I had gained during Semester 01 & 02's Typography modules. Initially, I was really blur when starting this semester as the holiday totally swept all my knowledge into a dark corner of my brain. However, this module really allowed me to take a step back and try to recall what I had learnt previously in order to try and create things that I was proud of. I think equally important was the help I had received in this class; mainly from Mr Vinod & Adeline, who helped answer any questions I had when I had a block stuck in my head on how to improve. I spent quite a bit of time in the Common Ground space with Adeline as we cheered each other on (and died in the chairs), so I would recommend anyone to get their own Adeline as an emotional support & working buddy during this class.
Observation
I would say the main way for learning how to create interesting layouts is to use your eyes. Before this semester, I had zero idea what Publishing Design would entail as I expected it to be very standard book or newspaper design, but gladly I was wrong! It's much more than that, with endless possibilities of what you can do within your given dimensions. I would say I struggled with the edgy feel at first, as I have always done safe things previously, but as I used different ways to learn how others did theirs on Pinterest or Behance, I was able to try and branch out of my comfort zone which I so badly needed to learn to do.
Findings
During this module, I was really able to find out the multiple ways that layouts can be done. Even with a simple grid system, there are so many possibilities for how the end result can come through. With that, I initially was skeptical as to how to continuously make variation for the styles I committed to. However, Mr Vinod's Form & Movement exercise really helped me whenever I felt stuck, especially while I was making the Brand Guideline as my layout really focused on using the columns to make the most of my space.
