INSTRUCTIONS

Forming the Group

During Week 02, we were instructed by Mr Shamsul to form our groups. Thus, I grouped with Adeline, Jacklyn & Maisarah. We discussed our name in the WhatsApp group and formed, JAAM.

To ensure that the group worked together, we decided to set rules to make sure everyone did their tasks and contributed equally to the project.

Meeting with BioScience students

During Week 04, the BioScience students provided us with a presentation for their food products.

Then, during Week 07, they contacted us again to have another meeting regarding the final product.

After the meeting, they also provided a document with the Packaging Design requirements.

They also provided us with the information regarding the product.

Group Meeting #1

We had our first group meeting on 19th October (Week 08, ILW Week). A few days before, I asked for the group to come up with different names for the product. During the meeting, we came together to do so.

As above, we listed our suggested names and voted. In the end, we established our name would be Banana Pom.

As Maisarah told us that we had to design the packaging and the P.O.P. based on her experience in the previous semester, we agreed on placing ourselves into subgroups of two to get the job done easier. We all agreed to spin the wheel to delegate who would design the packaging and the other two would focus on the P.O.P.

Week 09 Progress

For Week 09, I had advised my group to find inspiration. For progress, I also put in some colour suggestions and referred to the notes by Mr Shamsul which would relate to the product.

After getting Ms April's feedback, Adeline and I quickly analysed the references we had found.

After we had done so, our group decided to set mini deadlines for ourselves to keep ourselves on track.

During the class, Adeline and I further discussed our task together as Jacklyn & Maisarah weren't in class with us. Below is the update we provided them both.

The next day, we had another meeting. Before the meeting, I tried out some typeface combinations and found some colour palettes based on what we voted on as a group (mainly greens). During the meeting we voted for our preferred versions.

Our group members also provided their own updates. For example, Adeline provided her updates regarding the visuals she was creating on Blender.

After the meeting, I provided the group with the link to the typefaces so that everyone could download and save it to their systems.

For the next few days, I worked on the Cooking Instructions and the Nutritional Information.

Week 10 & 11 Progress

This week, my team really tried our best to push out the packaging, with Jacklyn helping us more now.

I prepared sketches to plan how to layout our content.

Figure 1.5.1 - 1.5.5 My Sketches

On 01/11/2022, Adeline and I called whilst designing to collaborate on designing the packaging. During this time, we were still under the impression that we had to design a P.O.P. because when we tried to reconfirm with Maisarah, she still insisted it was needed.

Before class, I had input them into a mockup and uploaded to Miro for easier viewing when presenting to Mr Shamsul.

After getting feedback from Mr Shamsul, my group and I opted to design a modern looking design. We then informed Maisarah about our plans since she did not come to class. We also clarified to her about the part where she was confused.

Figure 1.5.9 Message to Maisarah

Following Mr Shamsul's feedback, we quickly made a Google Form to gain the responses of the public, so that we had a bit of research to support our decisions.

I also altered the nutritional information to fit the format Mr Shamsul suggested. For the daily values, I used this calculator

After a few days, we closed the survey, which had a total of 113 respondents. Overall, we got that there was a clear support to box packaging. Before that, my group had looked at existing modern references to gain more of a sense of which direction we wanted to head to.

For my version, first I sketched it out.

After that with my references and the previous work, I designed it in Adobe Illustrator.

Then, most of my group uploaded our progress onto Miro on 04/11/2022. (The last one uploaded on 8th November).

Figure 1.5.13 Group Progress

To enhance our group's track, I suggested mini deadlines again. Sure, it was rushed progress, but it would have guaranteed us succeeding to present on time, especially since Adeline and I had deadlines for one of our classes.

Figure 1.5.14 Mini deadlines

Before class, we once again made mockups. However, for Maisarah's we did it for her since she didn't attend class again.

During the feedback session, my group and I got helpful feedback from Mr Shamsul. Unfortunately, we also had to ask him if we could kick the member who wasn't cooperative and kept ghosting us. Luckily, he said yes.

Then, we each segregated our parts for the presentation.

Moving on, we each altered our designs and created the proper dielines.

Figure 1.5.16 Progression

Then, we had a final consultation with Mr Shamsul where he finalised our picks for presenting. He chose the two left ones.

Whilst preparing for feedback, Adeline and I were busy doing the slides. For more effective communication, we called whilst we got some things done. Other than that, we just did it during our free time.

The next day, we practiced and finalised our slides. The slides are placed in Final Submission~

FEEDBACK

Week 09:

  • Dissect existing packaging and find what you like from them to get the best outcome.
  • Ensure that there is a set theme and target that market.

Week 10:

  • Looks a bit kampung now, can move away from Kawan’s style
  • One for kawan food, one for how we would prefer.
  • Should come up with logo for the packaging
  • Planogram needed for this
  • Show research
  • Current trends in Malaysia
  • What is proposed
  • Can attract consumers through colours & visuals
  • Think of consumers who buy just for packaging
  • Try to choose a colour that stands out from competitors
  • Shape of packaging should not differ from the competitors. zipper pouch might not be suitable.
  • UV layer on packaging if box, that one has to be covered in plastic film so that it doesnt get destroyed.
  • For back, no need to keep using the boxes. now the space is strained. Try to avoid.
  • The shape of the plane can have a wave instead of just a wave.
  • Have subtle textures (graphic patterns) to see the outcome.
  • Look similar is okay for the typeface of the nutrients
  • If info should be bolded, then bolded.
  • Remember to include banana blossom graphics

Week 11

  • Don't need to use the leave all the time, to give different perception, use plate instead.
  • Make sure all necessary info are there
  • The first one look like a software packaging design
  • The second one looks interesting but make sure to have margin
  • The third one looks like a book.
  • The fourth one should have more simplistic wave.

REFLECTION

Experience

Overall, I would say that this project has guided me and taught me many things. For one, how to design packaging for a specific item with goals and tasks in mind. I definitely struggled alongside my group when we first made the initial design as we wanted something that represented the brand, but we didn't want it too look too old-school and wanted a more modern fresh look for it. This experience has also taught me that I will not always be in control of my team mates' actions. For one, I was extremely frustrated with the member which my group had kicked out for misleading us despite the fact she had taken this class in previous semesters. Thank God for Mr Shamsul's understanding in what our group had faced.

Observation

Observing was a key factor to this task. Before starting, my group and I found it hard to figure out what to do. However, I'm grateful for Ms April's advice on how to start, which was finding what we liked from existing works. I think this really got the team starting and our gears switching. Observation also played a huge role in the end product of our packaging, which is awesome!

Findings

I would say I have definitely learnt a lot from this task. Since we worked with Kawan Food & another programme, it was really eye opening to see what it is like to have clients, even if it is probably a nicer experience that most out there. I also learnt a olot more about packaging in Malaysia which I had never noticed before.
